Review: While I applaud Peg Streep’s work here, I have to think I’m not the only one who felt the workbook was deeply triggering. For those of us who had an especially cruel family dynamic it may be best to do these workbook exercises within a group or with a therapist. In each section there’s a disclaimer that says if you start to feel anxious and triggered, stop which is fine and well except I am on the third chapter and have felt this way throughout the entire workbook. Part of me wonders when the book will start to feel healing and the other part of me feels like if I don’t finish it I am failing. I’ve talked about my childhood in therapy ad nauseum for decades and have come a very long way, but the workbook is intense and feels like I am digressing to revisit so many painful memories. Many of us who grew up in this environment deal with c-ptsd symptoms and when that’s the case I wonder how healthy this workbook is to do by ourselves ?

This workbook is the perfect companion to Daughter Detox, full of healing journals prompts, exercises, visualizations, coloring pages, and more. The workbook is beautifully designed and inspires the kind of reflection and introspection necessary for true healing. Readers have been asking for just this sort of thing (just comb the author’s Facebook page and see for yourself). Peg Streep listened and delivered. Unloved daughters: Recover, Reclaim, Rejoice!

Review: I never felt like this author was relating to me and when I got to the positive self-talk page I saw why. Here the author suggests we speak nicely to ourselves about our abilities and lists seamstress, knitter, hostess, chef, flower arranger and gardener. Why not chess player, stock market player or current events analyst? There were only three sports listed: skier, swimmer and tennis player. Way too country club for me! The character traits were highly gendered too — loyal, listener, empathic, patient, helpful, giving, supportive, thoughtful, understanding. Where were negotiator, leader, organizer, challenger? In other words, the lens through which the author experiences the world informs her writing and, I would argue, limits its applicability.

Review: This unique, timely, and incredibly healing Guided Journal and Workbook is one that is both a perfect companion to Peg Streep’s supportive and successful book by the same name (http://amzn.to/2pbKW5N), and also one which could proudly stand alone. The author has woven a beautiful web of a healing process and the opportunity for daughters to participate in their own journey that readers can address, in a manner that provides the ability to take steps that we might not have even been aware of needing in the first place. This positive self-realization and self-discovery workbook gently guides the reader/seeker of well-being on a path toward healing that is necessary to move forward and take the much-needed steps toward recovery and a lighter heart. It also has the potential to unfold and uncover some much needed awareness at any desired comfortable pace, while including some incredibly beneficial information and loving guidance along the way. Every exercise is presented in an enjoyable fashion, where it almost becomes hard to recognize the “work” part of the Workbook since the author so eloquently addresses the process to meet the needs of each individual reader while covering the common thread that applies to all who are on this journey. I highly recommend both this Guided Journal/Workbook as well as Ms. Streep’s companion book (and her other incredible gems) and even if you think that you do not have the time to give this the attention it (and you) deserves, I wholeheartedly feel that the healing that can result from this is limitless and worth every minute of giving yourself the chance to soothe your soul and move forward with ease of mind and heart. Review: A companion to “Daughter Detox:Recovering from an Unloving Mother.” Very helpful and illuminating. I am not one to journal normally, to be guided is very helpful. I am still working through the exercises and will be for awhile. I wanted to leave a review before I finished as I am taking my time. I can say I highly recommend from what I have done so far. Not always easy, but I believe I will enjoy my discovery into myself and taking my emotional inventory, and understanding why, healing, and becoming who I choose to be.

Title: Workbook reinforces and adds to Daughter Detox learning and healing

Review: I bought the workbook some time ago when first published but have only just worked my way through it. I wanted first to process some of what I learned from its companion book, Daughter Detox. That is the beauty of this publication — it can be picked up and put down as inclination and circumstances allow. As the author writes at the beginning: “If a question or a prompt makes you anxious . . ., please stop. There’ll be another time to do the work.” Recovering from the effects of an unloving mother’s behaviours is stressful in itself, and it is a strength of this journal that its author is conscious of this throughout and encourages “cool processing” of memories so that the reader/journaller is led towards healing rather than being stuck in an unhelpful emotional quagmire. I have used the various colouring pages scattered throughout the book to relax myself before tackling sensitive topics and think that they were an inspired inclusion, as is the index which makes it possible to home in with ease on specific topics. This is not a workbook to be filled in and discarded: this is something that once completed becomes a personal reference book of the road to healing from the effects of growing up with an unloving parent.
