When it comes to setting your rates, you have a few options:

  1. Hourly rates
  2. Project rates that are decided upon at the beginning of each project
  3. “Productized” services (i.e. An “e-commerce store development” package that has a set number of deliverables involved and is charged at a flat fee)

Starting out as a freelancer ain’t easy. At Domino, we’ve found that many new freelancers find their first project through their existing network.

Friends, family and coworkers are your best option early on. They will be more inclined to hire you or recommend you to someone they know who needs your expertise. You’ll often find they’re your best promoters, too.

Follow Michael’s example and use your Facebook or email them personally.

We use Slack to cultivate our growing global community. An active 1200+ freelancers from over 66 countries are exchanging freelancing techniques, tips, and ideas in our various channels.

There’s a place for coders and developers to geek out in #q-and-a-code, or have design talk in #q-and-a-design. Our latest channel, #q-and-a-writing, allows people from different fields come together to become better wordsmiths.

Other proven popular communication tools and apps are:
- Google Docs for collaborative planning, editing and copywriting.
- Marvel for mockups.
- FaceTime or Skype for face to face video conversations.
- Slack for general real-time communication.

Time is a precious and under valued commodity. Sometimes, we just need to stick to our guns and say no to projects that don’t fit who you are as a freelancer.

Lanya Olmsted suggests you “fake it to you’ll make it.” Believe in yourself and others will believe in you too. You have to be your biggest cheerleader.

Freelance illustrator Amrit Singh suggests you focus on networking, collaborating with others and focus on constantly developing your skills.
