Sweden, the home of free gyms…

Life in Stockholm can be stressful at times, especially when it comes to choosing a gym. Finding the right gym, at the right price can be difficult, with so many to choose from, it can seem an impossible task. But don’t worry, along with many other benefits Stockholm has to offer, they also have plenty of free gyms to train, get fit and exercise.

Stockholms Stad, the government body of Stockholm, have over thirty out door gyms for people to use, anytime, any day (except in winter when they are hidden by snow) Utegyms (Swedish word for out door gym) are hand built out of wood and steel and designed with everybody in mind, no matter of your age, gender or body type.

You can easily have a full body work out at most of the free out door gyms. For strengthening your leg muscles they have squat and deadlifts. For your back and biceps they have horizontal bars for shoulder chin-ups. A gym would not be a gym without a place to build up strength in your pectoral and upper body muscles. Each utegym has a machine for dips, bench press and shoulder press. Finally they have a place to strengthen your abdominals, though if it has been raining I would advise to skip this part, nothing worse than a wet bum when running in the Stockholm ‘fresh’ air. To complete your work out and stretch off, most people find innovative ways to use the machines to stretch out the built up lactic acid.

There is a fantastic free gym in Tantolunden park just near Zinkensdamm and Hornstull.

The free out door gyms are usually set in a picturesque park, surrounded by beautiful woodland, a great way to relax, unwind and get back in touch with nature. If you find the atmosphere at fitness clubs such as SATS, Fitness 24/7 and Fresh Fitness a little too intense, then the out door gyms are a perfect place for you to exercise and get fit.

I know from personal experience that gym memberships for clubs such as SATS, Fitness 24/7 and Puls och Träning can be difficult to get for international people, especially if you don’t have a Swedish personal number, or bank account. Outdoor gyms will be the perfect alternative, and will also save you a lot of money. However, if you want the benefit of an indoor gym but not the hassle of a monthly contract, then Gymgo is the place to go.
