Why Local Businesses Need to Use Google My Business

When people use Google to search for services in their local area they are presented with a list of local businesses. It’s valuable to have your business here because it’s displayed before the first search result.
Known as the local pack, it shows your business name, reviews, opening times, phone number, website link and directions. As a local business with a shop or office this is a great way to get your business in front of your customers and take your first step on the local SEO ladder.
If your customers are already aware of your business and search for you in Google, Google My Business will show all your details on the right hand side. This will show the same details as mentioned above but will also show your Google reviews in more detail, list Facebook reviews and show a link to your photos and street view.
It’s a fairly straight forward process and if you’ve already got a Google account then it’s even easier. Here’s what you need to do.
Go to https://www.google.com/business/ to get started on your Google My Business profile.
Enter your business details
Once you’ve created an account you need to start entering your business details. Here’s the information that you have to enter to start with.
- Business name — This is your full business name.
- Country / Region
- Street address — Make sure that your address is exactly the same as displayed on your website.
- Main business phone — It’s best to use a landline number to take advantage of the area code.
- Category — Select a category that relates to your business.
If your business delivers goods and services to customers at their location then you need to check “yes”. Clicking continue will take you to the next step about your delivery area. Enter your region, city or post code followed by the distance from your business you’re willing to deliver to.
In the next step, check the box to verify that you’re authorised to manage the business page and continue. Then in the next step you will click “continue and verify later”.
In the Google My Business console under the info tab you’ll be able to add more information about your business such as;
- Additional categories
- Opening times
- Special hours — For irregular opening times
- Website address
- Photos — Upload photos for cover, profile, logo, interior, exterior, at work and team.
To complete the process and publish your business profile on Google Search, Google Maps and Google+ you’ll need to verify your business.
To verify your business you will need to enter a special code which you can request via phone or mail.
Get some reviews
Good news! Google have just changed the way reviews work for businesses. You used to require five reviews before your overall rating and reviews would show on your profile but now they can start to show with only to one or two reviews.
