There’s a type of dog for every person, even for introverts. While getting a dog demands a huge responsibility, you don’t have to be an outgoing type of person to qualify for one.

Some dog breeds require only a quick walk around the block twice a day, while some dog breeds require extensive exercise in order to release their pent up energy.

If you are the type of owner who rarely goes out and would rather stay at home most of the time, there are dogs that are perfect for you.

Fortunately, there are hundreds of dog breeds that have their own personalities, and some of them do well with introverts.

The following dogs are more like you — they love the couch, they do their own thing, and they don’t cause too much fuss.

1. Chow Chow

Chow Chows are independent dogs that are perfect for those introverts who live alone. They are quiet and aloof, and they are very protective of their home. They are loyal and will follow only one alpha for the rest of their lives. They are not as energetic as other breeds and would rather be left alone most of the time. They only need about 20 minutes of walk every day, so it’s perfect for those who don’t go out much.

2. Pug

Pugs are goofy and charming dogs who love to cuddle. They love to play and be social once in a while, but like any introverts, they need to recharge and be on their own. Just like the chow chows, they only need minimal exercise.

3. Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhounds are gentle creatures despite their imposing size. They can be reserved and observant, and they move at their own pace. They need to be walked for about 30 minutes per day, but after that, they would rather lie around and relax for the rest of the day.

4. Akita

Akitas are strong and powerful dogs who would rather stay by your side than play with other dogs. They’re also very territorial and could be aggressive towards other pets. They may seem serious and intense to others, but with their owners, they are laid back and relaxed. They need to be walked for at least 30 minutes a day.

5. Beagle

Beagles are one of the most popular choices for family dogs because they are extremely friendly and they bond well with children. However, they also prefer solitude after they’ve taken their daily dose of exercise. They will happily laze around with you, but they always need some company. If you must leave, either be very quick or have someone watch over them because they can easily get stressed without you.

6. Newfoundland

Newfoundland dogs have gorgeous coats that easily attract attention, though all they really want is yours. They are meek and well-behaved, so discipline is not an issue. They need a good amount exercise of at least 20 minutes per day because of their slow metabolism. Other than that, they don’t require much. They’re one of the sweetest and loveliest dog breeds.

7. Greyhound

Despite the fact that Greyhounds are one of the fastest dogs, they have a lazy and leave-me-alone attitude that resembles that of an introvert. They are even-tempered and they’re very tolerant of children. They require about 20 minutes of walk a day, but after that, they will steal your couch and snooze off.

8. Basset hound

Basset hounds are excellent sniffers who could easily go on an adventure on their own. However, their hunting activity might be short-lived as they would rather spend time on the couch than outside. Because of their laziness, they are prone to obesity, so make sure to walk them twice a day.

9. Basenji

Basenjis are one of the most low-maintenance dogs and are good candidates for apartment living. They are often dubbed as “barkless” dogs because they only make yodeling sounds.

Independent, silent, and impressively tidy, they are the quintessential introvert dogs. They need at least 40 minutes of exercise per day and a good amount of mental stimulation, so be prepared to give them pet toys that would keep them entertained.

10. Shiba Inu

Shiba Inus are the most popular family dog in its native country — Japan. They are becoming more popular in Western countries as well because of their unparalleled loyalty to their alpha.

They are reserved with strangers and comfortable only with their owners. They are intelligent yet stubborn, and they have a mind of their own. They require an exercise of at least 30 minutes a day and need to be securely fenced in because they’re good at escaping.

Whether you’re a fan of huge dogs or small dogs, the snuggly type or the independent type, there’s certainly a dog that will suit introverts like you.

Head on to the nearest shelter and look for these breeds. There’s always a dog waiting to be adopted and willing to give you unconditional love.
