The first batch of 500 Kickstarter backers and pre-order customers have already started to receive their Vigos, and a new batch of 200 units have just been sent out today. We’ve received a lot of comments and emails from users who have already received their Vigo with questions on how to use the device correctly, and we would like to address these issues in this update. Below are some of the common questions we’ve received, in order of frequency.
How to I put on Vigo?
Vigo comes with 2 ear grips and 6 ear gels in different sizes — small, medium and large for the left and right ear each. Depending on your personal preference and ear size you can pick the one that fits you. When putting on Vigo, it’s easier to place the ear gel into your ear canal first, then looping the ear grip over your ear. Both the ear gel and ear grip serve to stabilize Vigo so that the sensor remains pointed at your eye. The following video demos this.
How do I get Vigo to pick up my blinks?
The infrared sensor at the tip of Vigo is highly sensitive to position, so correct positioning of the sensor is essential being able to pick blinks up correctly. The sensor should be 1–2cm or a finger’s width away from your eye, parallel to your line of vision. It should be able to see your eye directly from the corner of your eyes. The neck of Vigo is bendable and may be adjusted to fit the curvature of your face so that you can get the sensor in the right position.

It takes a bit of practice. Try experimenting with different distances from your eye (if it’s too close the sensor won’t see your eye in full, and if it’s too far it won’t pick up enough movement from your blinks), as well as different angles (we’ve found it works great when pointing upwards from the bottom of your eye, but for some people with larger faces Vigo won’t reach and it’s easier to have Vigo point at the side of your eye). The ear grip and ear gel serves the purpose of getting the sensor to remain stable relative to your eye. For people with high cheekbones it is possible to rest Vigo against your cheekbone where it can be very stable. People wearing glasses can also lean the sensor tip against the inside lens of your glasses, where it will remain stable and be at the correct distance away from your eyes.
Vigo finds my blinks, but keeps asking me to recalibrate
Vigo will ask you to recalibrate or readjust Vigo if it can’t sense your blinks anymore. Rather than tapping the recalibrate button, which takes you through the blink tutorial, you can try readjusting Vigo directly so that it picks up your blinks again. Vigo may ask you to recalibrate if the sensor has slipped out of place since you last adjusted it; in that case try tightening the ear grip and ear gel in your ear so that Vigo is stable in the same spot and doesn’t slip.
I can’t find the app
You may download the app in one of three ways:

We have been getting one-star ratings for the app from some users, which lowers the visibility of the app and makes it harder for other backers to find the app. Please refrain from negative comments with the app while still learning to use Vigo; it’s not a problem with the app but with the positioning of the device that is causing the app to be unable to pick up blinks.
Vigo alerts me too often
The sensitivity of Vigo can be adjusted in the app’s Settings screen. High, medium and low sensitivity corresponds to response rates of 15 seconds, 30 seconds and 60 seconds, which is the interval that Vigo checks to see your current state of alertness. A higher sensitivity corresponds to more frequent alerts and as well as faster updates to your alertness score.
The app crashes
If the app has been crashing for you, please send us an email at email@example.com with the make and model of your phone, software version (e.g. iOS 9 or Android 5.1) as well as what you did that caused the crash, and we’ll look into it.
I’m having trouble pairing
To turn on Vigo, press the main button for 3–5 seconds until it says “Power On”. To turn off Vigo, press the main button for 3–5 seconds until it says “Power Off”. To enter pairing, make sure the device is off, then press and hold the main button for 5–8 seconds; the device will say “Power On — Pairing” and the red and blue lights will flash.
I’ve paired Vigo to my phone but the app still asks me to connect to Vigo
Vigo actually contains two Bluetooth chips — one for audio and one for the alertness functionality. Pairing to the Vigo Headset in your phone’s Settings only connects the audio functionality for calls. The app separately connects with the device via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for the alertness functionality, which is why there are two steps to connecting Vigo.
Vigo flashes in my eye
The LED at the tip of Vigo only flashes when:
1. You are in pairing mode, when it flashes red and blue. Go to Settings>Bluetooth on your phone to pair up the device and it will stop flashing
2. Vigo is not connected to the app, when it flashes blue every few seconds. Make sure the app is running and Vigo should connect automatically. If it doesn’t, go to the app’s Settings and choose Re-pair Vigo.
3. Vigo detects you’re drowsy and alerts you. You can toggle this alert on and off in the app’s Settings.
