Caerphilly, Welsh Caerffili castle town and urban (from the year 2011), built-up area), Caerphilly County borough with the county seat of historic significance Glamorgan (Morgannwg), south Wales. It is situated in the northern region of the Cardiff metropolitan area, about 7 miles (11 km) north-northwest of central Cardiff.
The castle of the 13th century was an important location from which the town was first established. Though incomplete, the structure was demolished by Llywelyn, an ap Gruffudd, in 1270. It was rebuilt with some improvements from the 14th century. It covers 30 acres (12 hectares). It is the largest in Britain after Windsor. It was built on a concentric layout with an enclosure moat. The castle was abandoned in 1536. A portion of it was used as an inn. Parliamentary forces also destroyed it during the English Civil Wars (the 1640s). One tower is still standing with an incline following the unsuccessful attempt to destroy them. The castle was given to the Crown by the marquess of Bute in 1949.
The 19th century was when Caerphilly was transformed into a mining town and was also a center for the local cheese-making industry. The cheese-making industry was briefly suspended, but it was quickly resumed. While the city was damaged and lost its population during the 20th century because of the end of mining coal, the town has since been attracting various other industries of light. It’s also a crowded commercial area and a stop for commuters to Cardiff.
