History of Chennai: Chennai, formerly known as Madras, it is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. As per folk lore, the name Chennaipattinam arrived from the Chenna Kesava Perumal temple. The Pallava, the Chola, the Pandya, and Vijaynagar the noticeable dynasties ruled over Chennai. The Portuguese arrived at Chennai during 1522 and they were followed by the Dutch in 1612. During 16th and 18th century, Madras was ruled by Portuguese and Frenchmen. Elliot’s Beach: Elliot’s Beach is a calm beach and is considered one among the cleanest beaches in Tamil Nadu. This beach is situated towards the south of Marina beach, it has the Velankanni Church and the Ashtalakshmi Kovil in the vicinity.

Covelong Beach: Located on the coast of Coromandel, this beach is famous for water sports activities and the serene beauty of its surroundings. This beautiful beach is located 40 kms away from Chennai. The sand is white and clean and is flanked by palm trees which makes this beach more beautiful.

Famous Temples in Chennai

The 7th century Kapaleeshwarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are two entrances to the temples with a gopuram (tower-like) on both the sides. Temple has a tank in the West which is surrounded by broad streets on four sides. Goddess Parvati is worshipped in the temple and has been incarnated as Goddess Karpagambal or the ‘Goddess of the Wish-Yielding Tree’. Close to Marina beach, is a Sri Parthasarathy Temple which is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The Temple was built by the Pallavas in the 8th century. The temple has incarnations of Lord Vishnu in his four forms namely Narasimha, Rama, Varaha and Krishna.

San Thome Church: The church was first built by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, became a cathedral in 1606, and was later reconstructed by the Britishers in the 19th century. This church is one of the only three known churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus, the other two being St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain.

Mahabalipuram: Mahabalipuram is situated at a diatance of 52 kms fromChein Kanchipuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu. Mahabalipuram is an ancient port city known for its beaches and temples. It is famous for its shore temples built in 7th century. It’s a World Heritage Site and characterized by some fascinating archaeological wonders.
