WebP Photoshop

WebP is a file format that uses lossy and lossless image compression. This was introduced by Google in 2010 and was used to reduce the size of basically JPG or PNG images without making any harm to the quality of the original image. According to Google the size of the WebP file is 26% smaller compared to the size of a PNG image and 25%- 34% smaller compared to a JPEG image.

WebP functions within a small storage space and it allows transparency and at the same time if you want your website to load fast then the best option is using WebP. Currently, WebP is gaining a higher recognition within software industry as Google Chrome and Opera support WebP and also recently social media like facebook, twitter to have updated their applications with the WebP feature so that photos uploaded to these applications by the users will be automatically converted to the WebP file format.

It is of great importance that Photoshop too allows the WebP file format but you should install a suitable plugin to your device for that as Photoshop doesn’t support WebP directly.

How WebP functions in Photoshop

To open WebP files in Photoshop you need to install a suitable plugin for your device. One good plugin is the plugin recognized by Telegraphic. This plugin is at the version of 1.2b4.

It is supported by 32 bit and 64-bit Photoshop in Windows and Mac. Another good plugin that you can use in your Photoshop is the plugin supported by fnordware.

This plugin is in Beta and it is also supported by Windows and Mac.

To download the suitable plugin you should check the version of photoshop that you are using whether it is 32bit or 64bit by clicking the “about” in Photoshop in the menu bar at the top.

After finding out the plugin that suits your photoshop version you can install it to your device. Then it is necessary to copy and paste the plugin to the Photoshop file but before copying and pasting the plugin file you should keep in mind to close the Photoshop folder.

After copying the plugin the WebP format will be visible to you in your Photoshop folder. So when you are saving a file there the WebP File format will also be visible with both lossy and lossless options.

If you are interested in the quality of the image then you can select the lossy compression of the WebP format and you can choose a quality and if you are interested in getting the image with the original quality then you can choose the lossless compression of the WebP format.

On the other hand, choose lossy compression if you need a JPEG image to be saved and you can choose the lossless compression if you need a PNG image to be saved.

So now you know that you can use the WebP Photoshop too by installing a suitable plugin for your photoshop application.

Enjoy and have fun by working with WebP in your Photoshop file.
