Instagram is listening to you
Damián Le Nouaille

Whilst it might feel like it – its probably the other way around. Your interests and shared interests suggest that you’d probably be open to seeing certain products – the data from social, search, location and behaviour then prompts the ad (you’ll have also seen a hundred which didn’t jump out at you), and then when you saw the ad, you were reminded of the conversation. In many ways – this is a good use of data – the product suggested matched something you want, but this is uncanny valley, and it feels too much like they “knew”.

But – philosophical question here – would you rather than 100 adverts which are irrelevant, filling up your feed, or one or two brilliantly insightful ads, answering your needs and wants?
