Marijuana: Should You Get It To Be More Creative?
This article is written to find out — does marijuana really increase your ability to think creatively?
The number of masses, who would agree that drugs like heroin and methamphetamine are good for you is actually very less. However, marijuana isn’t one of these drugs. It has a good image and that’s all, because of its medicinal benefits. I’m sure you would agree to this, as you might have read several blogs on the web related to its medical uses.
I’ve come across many users, who find marijuana’s mind-altering effect, usually known as ‘high’ very useful. I guess they’ve a solid reason behind this. If you go by their words-of-mouth, marijuana chills them out, relaxes their minds, and even helps them to be more creative.
What does science think about marijuana?
As per several reports and studies, marijuana is helpful for making people perceive themselves. It helps them get more creative thoughts and ideas. This could be one of the reasons why many artists and musicians tout its benefits.
However, perceptions aren’t necessarily to be the same as reality — and everybody knows that marijuana actually alters perceptions. The research on marijuana concludes that even if people find them more creative under its effect, it’s nothing, but an illusion. Since the use of marijuana doesn’t give the same results for everyone, there are users, who complain to be less creative after its usage. A recent study in the Netherlands proves this fact.
In this study, 60 cannabis users were eyed to figure out the effects of this drug on ‘divergent thinking’ — the ability to think, or brainstorm to find solutions to problems. After having a high and low dose of vaporized marijuana with no THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the participants were asked to come up with as many creative uses for two general items, like a shoe or a pen, as they could.
The results surprised everyone. It was found that the low dose of marijuana didn’t affect the participants’ ability to be creative, whereas, the high dose drastically lowered their creativity. Hence, it’s proved that being actually creative and having the feeling of creative aren’t the same thing.
Interestingly, the expectations of users about the drugs they’re taking do matter. Different researches have shown that patients usually act or perform in a way correspond to how they wanted the drugs to affect them.
To sum up, your beliefs about the drugs are more powerful than you actually think. Also, you don’t need to get under the influence of drugs to get the effect you expect — in fact, it’s better if you just stay away from such drugs to do even better.
