Better to drink than pack, 4/60: Crozes

It’s official. I’m moving. I was given 60 days to vacate, and the wine is definitely coming with me, inside me, probably. Memories and tasting notes are easier to store and transport.

Half-price mushrooms, which are just as good, if not better, because they’re showing their age. Broccoli spears cut out from the stalk because the florets were eaten already (and curly parsley can simulate the texture if you let your imagination take you). Potatoes, just cus. Meat? Who needs meat — we’re drinking 100% Syrah. And it’s a simple Crozes, not a lofty Côte-Rôtie. Perspective is everything; nothing here is second best.

Domaine Belle Les Pierrelles Crozes-Hermitage 2009 has fresh raspberry at first, but develops a complex, smoky, umami nose. The red berries yeild to cherries so that when it comes together, it smells a bit like cheesecake swimming in sauce. Some silky oak blends well with the grain. Not a huge attack, but mineral, with acid and tannins in a fight for the finish.

13% alc/vol, $25.60 (for 2011 which is the stocked vintage of this cuvée)
