What’s your name, major and hometown?
My name is Isabella but go by Bella. My major is International Relations with a minor in Arabic. I’m from Ridgewood, NJ.
What would be the most useful thing for me to know about you as a student?
I love class discussions and group work.
What do you wish was different about school?
I dislike the emphasis on grades rather than actually understanding the material.
Describe a moment in school last year when you felt really engaged. Why do you think that moment was such a positive one for you?
I took a Government and Politics class my senior year in high school and we had debates on current social and political issues. The debates forced the class to engage with one another and listen to perspectives they otherwise wouldn’t have considered.
What do you think teachers think about you, and what do you wish they’d think about you?
Most of my teachers probably assume I’m shy and don’t have much of an opinion on topics. They’re correct that I’m shy but I voice my opinions when I feel strong enough. I plan to work on raising my hand more in class this year.
Tell me about a teacher who you feel knew you well. What kind of student were you in his or her class? What did he or she do to get to know you?
My government and politics teacher forced our class to discuss controversial topics, while of course maintaining a respectful environment. This class changed my perception on politics and social issues because I began to change my initial views. All of the students opened up and began participating more in his class. He tried to connect with us by encouraging us to speak openly and helped guide our discussions.
If you could build a school, what would it look like?
My ideal school would be bright and colorful. Most schools are bleak and I believe this in turn inhibit students from accessing their creative side. This school would focus more on class discussions and understanding the subjects rather than grades.
What do you wish I would ask you so that I can be a good teacher for you?
I love when the class works together rather than alone.
What makes a weekend day great for you?
I can’t wait to explore Milwaukee and find cool restaurants. I like hanging out with friends but being active.
What’s the best thing you’ve experienced on campus so far?
I love how it’s an urban campus so close to the city. It’s interesting to be exposed to the people living here as well as students.
What is your favorite song right now and why?
I like “Don’t matter to me” by Drake with Michael Jackson. I love this song because I love Michael Jackson and it’s crazy how influential he was as an artist that people are still making music using his old songs.
Finally, include a photo of yourself in your Medium post so I can start putting faces to names.
