First, none of that really has anything to do with the article. Monsanto doesn’t make all GMOs and they do sell A LOT of non-GMO seed. They even make seed bought by organic farmers. They have done questionable things for sure, but buying non-GMO doesn’t really impact them much. 99% of the seed they sell in Europe, for example, is non-GMO.

Second, the “infertile seed” thing is a myth. They bought a company in the 90s with a patent on that trait. Due to public backlash they never released it. But actually, much “non-GMO” seed is actually infertile. Think about all those seedless organic watermelon and grapes. When hybrid corn was developed in the earliest 20th century it was only fertile for the first generation. Those are F1 hybrids, used by the vast majority of non-GMO and organic commercial growers.

The contract, and I actually was curious enough to order seeds for my back yard to see it, just says they can’t save those specific seeds for replanting the following season. They are still free to purchase seeds the following year, or obtain them from any other source.

Patents too exist on non-GMO seeds, but not all GMOs have them.

My point in all of this is that corporations are certainly not our best friend, but boycotting the technology doesn’t really solve the concerns we have when they would just use other breeding methods instead.

I think Chipotle’s story sums it up best. When they dropped “GMO” based cooking oils because they were herbicide tolerant, they just replaced them with “non-GMO” based oils that come from herbicide tolerant sunflowers.

The only way to truly get around your concerns to grow your own and know your farmer to know what it is they are growing. Something I fully support for those who wish to. I love my vegetable garden.
