Dear North Carolina,
As you know, your state and state’s legislature has been in the news lately due to the recently passed and quite controversial HB2 “bathroom law.” It is my understanding that HB2 directs all public schools, government agencies and public college campuses to require that multiple-occupancy bathrooms and changing facilities, such as locker rooms, be designated for use only by people based on their “biological sex” stated on their birth certificate. I’ve heard people argue in favor of this bill claiming that is it in place to “protect women and girls.” The augment being basically that men would be in the ladies room and therefore could sexually assault a woman or girl. So, let me get this straight…. this bill is to PREVENT something that there is no record of ever happening? To my knowledge, no transgender woman has ever sexually assaulted a girl or woman in a restroom. Right? But you are afraid it might happen and therefore passed a bill based on fear. Ok, you know what ACTUALLY HAS HAPPENED… women have actually been raped by actual biological MEN in elevators. I think you should pass a bill banning men from all elevators. Because they might rape someone. They should take the stairs. Oh, wait. MEN have actually raped women in stairwells. New law- Men can’t take the stairs. No stairs. No elevators. Men can therefore not go into buildings higher than a single floor. What about protecting women from actual rapists North Carolina? This from the state that last year destroy over 300 untested rape kits from unsolved sexual assaults to make room in evidence storage. What about protecting those women?
I’ve also heard proponents of HB2 say that they don’t want grown men in the rest room with their young daughters. You say that this would make you uncomfortable. Well, guess what… I can’t send my young SON into a MEN’s room because of the awful things that could happen to him in there. I therefore need to bring my young son into the ladies room with me. I guess I can’t protect my son in North Carolina.
I’m bringing this to your attention so that maybe you will realize that the reason you are saying you passed this law carries no water. I call Bull Shit.
