Mild steel is a frequently confused term used loosely by those NOT in the know and almost devotedly by those in the know. Unlike stainless steel, mild steel is actually an iron-carbon alloy with less than 0.25 percent carbon. The induction of carbon makes it flexible or ductile but less hard, thus rendering it unsuitable for structural work.

Owing to its low carbon content, mild steel is easy to work with and quite malleable. But before mild steel came into the picture, there was wrought iron. Wrought iron is far more fibrous and gets its structure from being repeatedly worked on while it is still hot. And another factor with mild steel is that it’s strength and toughness can be improved by including measured amounts of other alloys such as nickel, chromium, vanadium, silicon, molybdenum and manganese.
 
Also known as plain-carbon steel, mild steel finds numerous applications owing to its malleable and ductile nature. Although mild steel plate has a relatively low tensile strength, it is comparatively cheaper. Moreover, the surface of the alloy can be hardened by exposing it to carburization. And all of these factors combined make mild steel plates the most commonly used material by companies across various industries. It is especially a favorite in projects which require an extensive amount of metal. As mentioned above, its structural strength inhibits its use for the construction of load-bearing and structural beams. But that is not to say that it does not find any good use. In fact, much of what we come across on a daily basis comes from the mild steel. Examples include motorcycle frames, car body panels, cooking utensils and even automobile chassis. And owing to its low resistance to corrosion, mild steel must be treated with paint or other forms of protective layering to keep it from rusting. Simpler methods include light coating of grease or oil will do the trick. Another advantage of low carbon content in mild steel is that it is easier to weld as compared to high-carbon steel. And since it is a lot less brittle than high-carbon density steel, mild steel comes in very useful in construction projects. Other applications of mild steel include pipes, chains, nuts & bolts, cable, wire, food cans, bicycle chains, magnets and knives.
 
Anyone who is a “builder” by profession would swear by the flexibility and versatility of mild steel. It is practically the bedrock of all manner of building and creation that spans across multiple industries and its application ranges from construction to electricals to the automobile industry.
