Westminster was founded in the mid 1700s by William Winchester. He came from Westminster, England and arrived in Maryland in 1731. He married Lydia Richards and eventually, the Richards line married into one of the founding families of Hampstead. Since then, the community has changed its name to Westminster because it was often mistaken for their neighbor Winchester. Westminster was formed in just a day; William quickly established commercial businesses like hotels, eateries and stores. He has helped build the town’s first church but multiple history references have disputed this. Westminster has certainly come a long way. The Carroll County Farm Museum has raked in a lot of tourists. In fact, they never run out of events.
