October Meetup Recap: Dear-Data
Hello and Happy New Month from the WeViz Team!
After a long silence through September and almost all of October, we managed to sneak in a dear data themed meetup on the last Saturday!
Our inspiration? The Dear Data Project
Dear Data was a year-long, analog data drawing project by Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec, two award-winning information designers living on different sides of the Atlantic. By collecting and hand drawing their personal data and sending it to each other in the form of postcards, they became friends.
How does it work?
Each week, and for a year, they collected and measured a particular type of data about their lives, used this data to make a drawing on a postcard-sized sheet of paper, and then dropped the postcard in an English “postbox” (Stefanie) or an American “mailbox” (Giorgia)!
They both spent their weeks noticing and noting down activities or thoughts, before translating this information into a hand-drawn visualization.
We met at the JTT Park in Ikeja, Lagos. It threatened to rain for a while but we waited, and the weather calmed to let us have our day.
We started the meet by watching a video on the ‘Dear Data’ project together, to further clarify our exact goals and process for the day.

We grabbed our stationery and began to visualize the data we had collected. While in the process, we had interesting conversations about Data Collection and its importance, Data Science, the future of Analytics and so on.

Our creative juices flowed freely! Which is a skill that is very needed when you’re trying to tell an engaging story from millions of rows of data. What better way than to start from the basics?

Everyone got a chance to present their vizzes and this gave us insights into one another’s living patterns — from internet data usage, sleeping patterns, fitfam frequency, eating habits to money spending patterns and so on.

We discussed our plans for the upcoming Vizathon, took group pictures and declared it a hella productive day!

Thank you to Tableau for sending us swags (lapel pins) and our reliable community members for showing up on the shortest notice! We promise to do better next time.
See you at the end of November for the Vizathon!
