A hammer is a tool. It can be used to build a home or to bludgeon a man to death.

I’m not sure where I picked this hammer analogy up, but it sure stuck with me. I’ve used frequently to describe technology. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, bookkeeping software, self-driving cars, and personal assistant listening devices of this Fourth Industrial Revolution are powerful tools that can be used for good or ill.

Big Government Is Big Tech: Conspiracy theory or fact?

Mirroring the early days of the telegraph, government programs spawned monopolistic Silicon Valley giants. Technologies from Siri to self-driving cars were DARPA military investments converted to commercial applications. After piping this tech in the private sector, new robber barons arise as the innovators and disruptors of existing commerce. Lobbyists get paid. Politicians get favors. Funding continues. And we consumers are treated like stupid sheep to be sheered as often as possible and unaware how the farm operates.
