The WICTGS and the VUW School of Design are thrilled to have Sunny Teich advising the final Capstone Projects for the 2018 cohort.

A writer and visual effects artist, Sunny has worked at major international studios including Disney Animation, Sony Imageworks and Weta Digital. In 2011, she was Weta’s Lead Technical Director in the development of the facial simulation technique first seen in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. She has spent the past four years as a Lead Effects Technical Director at Framestore London.

“My philosophy is that visual effects artists should not think of themselves as technicians, but as creators in their own right. That comes through an ability to communicate what you are doing and why, alongside technical skill and knowledge. I’m really excited about this opportunity to encourage the next generation of VFX artists to examine what they are trying to achieve and what it means to them.”

Her research interests include “the lexicon of effects” and how practitioners can better frame discourse so that the VFX industry can be understood more broadly. Additionally, Sunny studies realtime effects and the use of design as a narrative in order to better understand the limitations of technology and the related impact on storytelling.
