Title: What our animals can tell us about ourselves

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this little book about birds and the human beings who care for them. Moffitt imbues this memoir with bits of wry humor, pathos, and philosophical musings about life and love, not only among human beings but also between human beings and the animals they choose to share their lives with. In this case, the avian characters are macaws Boston (after the marathon), Phoenix (because it is just an excellent name for a bird), and Fred, who comes into the picture a little later, but learns to adapt to his new humans and avian brothers. The book shows us how loving animals entails a fair amount of sacrifice, but also some great rewards. Meanwhile, the book is also rich with observations about human beings, especially in rural areas. Favorite line (perhaps because I just bought a house): “Every life is far more than the residue it leaves behind.”

Title: Marvelous, insightful, and upbeat!

Review: Wonderful, well-written book that many people can relate to. A woman comes to terms with a parrot-centric home, spouse, and lifestyle; on a deeper level it is about relationship growth with both humans and animals. The author’s life changed dramatically in ways that speak to most people (although “bird people” will find the book particularly enthralling). Occasionally hilarious, occasionally sad, but consistently absorbing as she adapts with dignity and warmth. Highly recommend it!

Title: Love* the bird antics

Review: The question is always are you a dog person or a cat person? But what about bird people? I am so glad this book finally came out! How appropriate that Moffitt’s memoir begins on a running trail. She takes readers down the path of marrying a veterinarian and joining a household filled with dogs, lizards, and, you guessed it, birds. Together, Moffitt and her husband train 2 large macaws (Boston and Phoenix) to free fly. Just when you think you’ve recovered from the shock of learning these birds were released loose into the sky, the couple adopts a third macaw (Fred) and sets off on an unforgettable road trip with the entire flock. Incredible! Moffitt’s adventures range from the hilarious to the cringe worthy. No matter your preference (fur, scales, or feathers), readers and pet owners alike are sure to agree: animals become a part of your soul.

Title: A beautiful, witty and insightful love story

Review: A professional writer shares the beautiful story of her fledgling relationship with fellow trail running enthusiast and avian veterinarian. She, a former New Yorker (and Hawaii native), has in recent years become more comfortable with the slower paced lifestyle of rural Illinois, one with far less drama (or so she thought). Letitia tells of their adventures caring for high-maintenance macaws. With plenty of great storytelling, dry-witted humor, and several nail-biting situations, I was unable to put this book down. Great read!

Review: I’ve often wanted a pet bird, but I always felt that there was something terrible about confining a creature with wings to a cage. This book explores what it is to love birds so much you are willing to turn your life upside down to let them fly free. And in the course of describing this it becomes an exploration of fear, despair, love, redemption and commitment. It is remarkable achievement, and it will take you on a valuable journey of discovery.

Review: Loved this book, what an interesting concept of free flying parrots. I run a rescue in MI, so no way I could ever do that, but I sure feel bad for caged birds. So abnormal.
