One of the many hidden jewels of the Speyside region and nestled just a short walk west of the town of Rothes lies The Glenrothes distillery. One of the four distilleries native to the burn and founded in 1879 these chaps produce a truly complex vintage of scotch.

Following a vino tradition this distillery labels the spirit to the date of distillation and bottling. This, of course, is unique to the scotch trade as most expressions proudly display their age statements in bold print. While it is clear that The Glenrothes 2001, bottled in 2013, has been matured for twelve years the eloquently stated 2001 vintage adds something of a richness to the character of the label. Combined with the antiquated nature of the bottle this is a unique and classic scotch, perfect for any scotch collection.

A conversation starter to be sure, this honey nosed spirit packs a rather complex personality. It’s not just the hints of black cherry and the soft sweetness of the full vanilla flavor followed by the lingering spice that draws you in but the deep, rich tradition of The Glenrothes distillery as well. Built in the 13th century by Petrus De Pollock by order of King William the Lion Rothes castle played an important role in protecting one of the few highways in the region.

Flourishing due to the influence of the De Pollock family Rothes castle attracted attention from King Edward I as well as many other historical figures. In the 1390s control of the region passed to the Leslie family. The small town of Rothes began growing around the castle region in 1766. Shortly there after the castle was ruled condemned and destroyed. Today only one small section of the rear wall remains.

Should you find yourself a wary traveler exploring the hillsides of the Rothes region and come across this awe-inspiring sight take a moment find a shady spot behind the wall and enjoy a dram of The Glenrothes whisky. Let the perfect balance of wood and spirit fill your palate as you slowly breath out and feel the light tingling of cinnamon and spice on your lips. This is a dram that will linger with you all day and vista you soon won’t forget.
