If You Only Knew

If Only You Knew

The Innocent View of an Engagement Ring

“I remember that day, that day he walked in.

His eyes were dazed, his wallet thin.

Nerves had hit, like a hammer on a screw.

A love like that…if only you knew.

His heart was hopeful when he walked up to me.

Though his home would not grow a money tree.

But I saw those eyes, as he thought of you.

‘Something simple, with great beauty,’ in a breath or two.

‘I’ve got just what you need!’ The clerk said with pride.

He pulled me from the glass; his eyes opened wide.

I had dreamt of that moment a time or two.

For a love like that…if only you knew.

I did not cost much, for your love was free.

At least that’s what I got from him telling me.

He spoke of your engagement, and some bugs he ate.

I hope he isn’t sick on wedding day!

He told me his plan; he would fall on one knee.

At your favorite place for everyone to see.

A man like him, there’s only a few.

For a love like that…if only you knew.

He would buy a nice suit for that occasion.

Getting you dressed up would need no persuasion.

Just dinner and a movie; a night on the town.

I was ready, I practiced, I had it all down.

Back here is where the magic began.

You closed your eyes, he held your hand.

He stared at you sweetly for a moment or two.

For a love like that…if only you knew.

The lights a flicker and reflecting red.

Roses on the floor, their peddles on the bed.

One rose, then two, then three, and then four.

All separated into a path on the floor.

On each group, a poem typed out and folded

You were sure you had a man, kind and devoted.

He wrote of his feelings through and through.

For a love like that…if only you knew.

A table stood at the end of the room.

One unlit candle and wine to consume.

A tear you shed fell onto me

As he began his shaky, marriage plea.

From in my box I could hear you smile

I imagined our slow descent down the aisle.

I saw your face; that was my cue!

For a love like this…If only I knew.”
