‘Scrimping and Pinching to Make Ends Meet’: Celebrating the Way Beverly Cleary Wrote About Money
Nicole Dieker

I feel like an awful person because I remember the Ramona books clearly, and I remember that one of the main reasons I didn’t like them was that the family’s finances made me feel uneasy. Of course, at the time I didn’t realize that that’s what made me uneasy… I just didn’t like reading about it. My parents make fun of me because even as a child, and even though we weren’t very well off, I liked pretending we were wealthy and only reading about happier, wealthy families.
