In 2017 when Margot Gerritsen, Karen Matthys, and Judy Logan wanted to give more access to WiDS to audiences worldwide, they never dreamed that just a few years later, they would be locking arms with 200+ people from 50+ countries who are just as passionate about inspiring, educating, and supporting women in the data science field as they are.
WiDS Ambassadors are located all over the world and collaborate with us to bring the Women in Data Science (WiDS) annual Stanford conference to their cohorts, colleagues, and local communities. Regional events range from meetups with women in the industry sharing their interest in data science, to universities or companies hosting private or public events highlighting local keynote speakers talking about their research in multiple data science domains.
Between WiDS Stanford and regional events, the WiDS initiative has created a ripple effect throughout 20,000+ in-person participants worldwide.
Why become a WiDS Ambassador?
Community. Collaboration. Empowering women. These are the words that come to mind when we think about our WiDS Ambassadors.
Supportive Collaboration. Many ambassadors will collaborate with co-ambassadors to plan an event in their community. We highly encourage and support cross-collaboration across universities, companies, and even industries.
Community Networking and Relationships. Through planning local events, ambassadors establish community networks with other individuals who all share one common interest; their passion for data science across a broad set of domains. Many participants will range from those starting in the field, to top industry professionals, and everyone in between.
Strengthened Visibility. Ambassadors build close ties amongst their local speakers, sponsors, institutions, and organizations, and each other! We help to make those connections both online, and in-person at annual WiDS ambassador meetups.
Uniting Women Together. One of the most common shared benefits is the power gained in bringing women together. WiDS Ambassadors, speakers, and organizers elevate each other, creating a ripple effect that supports a powerful community of passionate women.
