How and Why You Should Apply for State Board Openings in Iowa

Making the rounds among progressives in Iowa is for more progressives (i.e. Democrats) to be involved on state boards. A popular link takes visitors to a state web page for “Current Board Openings.”

I was a little confused at first, but after some putzing around (and then actually reading the website), here’s how you can get involved at the state level through state boards.

Search based on the appropriate criteria.

When you first visit the “Current Board Openings” page, you’ll see several pages of board openings for many boards and departments, along with the number of openings.

Instead of aimlessly searching through one-by-one, you can use the “Search Criteria” box to narrow your search.

Gender: Some boards only have positions open for specific genders. In choosing “Male/Female,” you’ll narrow the search to only those openings available to yourself.

Party Affiliation: Like “gender,” some boards only have positions open for those members of either the Republican or Democratic parties. Unlike “gender,” however, you’ll get different results if you choose “Democrat” or “None.”

For instance, if I set my “Search Criteria” to “Gender: Male” and “Party Affiliation: Dem,” here are the first results:

Apply for the position.

Your next step is to login or create an account for the State of Iowa Enterprise A&A System, which the website uses for the applications. In my case, I don’t have an account so I’m going to “Begin Registration.”

I won’t go through the registration steps here in this article, but needless to say, the process took me less than 10 minutes total. It’s harder creating a Facebook account than this is.

Once you do have your account, you’ll be taken to the application for the specific board position, and since there aren’t any board openings applicable for myself, I can’t complete the application process right now. But here are the four steps that you’ll go through:

Get involved.

I have this to say, and I said it late last summer, the election of Donald Trump as president will awake Democrats to just how far they’ve sunk to the bottom when it comes to local elections.

It’s time for all of us to get involved, and I’m hoping that even though I myself might not be applicable for me, they might be applicable for you. And that’s what I’m hoping for. Get involved.
