There are a number of companies who adopt similar policies but where the parent with the baby at work takes a 20% pay cut. It’s an option, and I understand it. I’m not particularly empathetic to people feeling like others got something they didn’t for what I’d consider to be a humanitarian case like this, but it could be useful to eliminate the pressure on the parent, so they’re not concerned about their own productivity.

As we run our own business, we decided to err on the side of generosity. Productivity may indeed go down slightly while the baby is at work (though that has not been our experience), but it should pay off in spades in employee retention and job satisfaction.

And honestly even if it doesn’t, as an employer and business owner I’m happy to spend a bit more on something that helps new parents with the potentially difficult transition back into the workforce :)
