NYPL’s Alice instagram story, Gartner’s hype cycle, Edelman’s global trust scorecard, laddering, ethical investment
This week some slightly aged items that I have returned to time and again for their ongoing contribution to almost daily conversations around competitive positioning, ethics, technology and trust. But to start with — classic works of literature refurbished as instagram stories.

NYPL’s Alice in Wonderland instagram novel

Insta Novels launched Aug 22 on the New York Public Library’s Instagram account (@nypl) with Part 1 of a newly digitized version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. So good.

As good as it is, there are good questions too — about claimed accessibility, for one. From Five Things subscriber @drsophie73:
I kinda love this but the question keeps nagging — ‘accessible’ to whom? link

Gartner’s Hype Cycle 2018

Widespread artificial intelligence, biohacking, new platforms and immersive experiences dominate this year’s Gartner Hype Cycle. This year, Gartner also organized the 17 technologies into five major trends: Democratized artificial intelligence (AI), digitalized ecosystems, do-it-yourself biohacking, transparently immersive experiences and ubiquitous infrastructure.
I’m comforted, this year, to see Smart Dust finally bust its first move up the curve.

Edelman’s Global Trust Scorecard 2018
This is a link from earlier this year, but, alongside now ethics, I find the questions of trust emerge frequently in conversations on digital product, service and outreach and engagement.
The 2018 Edelman TRUST BAROMETER reveals a world of seemingly stagnant distrust. People’s trust in business, government, NGOs and media remained largely unchanged from 2017–20 of 28 markets surveyed now lie in distruster territory, up one from last year. Yet dramatic shifts are taking place at the market level and within the institution of media.
Good news: trust in journalism rebounds, even though trust in platforms has fallen further.

Plus, for extra points:
At the same time, voices of expertise are now regaining credibility. Journalists have risen 12 points, and CEOs recorded a seven-percentage point gain, since 2017. Technical experts, financial industry analysts, and successful entrepreneurs now register credibility levels of 50 percent or higher.

Ethical Investment on the rise in Australia

I’ve privately emailed this article to a few people over the past week, as conversations have turned to the role of capital funders on questions of ethics.
A new report has found climate, adult content and human rights abuses are some of the major issues being increasingly “screened” by fund managers in the rapidly growing responsible investment market.
Of the $1.56 trillion total assets professionally managed in Australia last year, 55 percent — or $866 billion — were managed using a responsible investment approach, up from 44 per cent in 2016, and more than double the 25 per cent figure globally, according to Responsible Investment Association of Australasia’s annual benchmark released today.

Scott Galloway on Laddering
A typically tight and fast-paced micro-class on laddering — depositioning the competition — from Professor Scott Galloway of NYU Stern and L2 inc. @profgalloway rackets along with his customary brio, steely outlook and comedic flourish. The Prof can be an acquired taste, but he’s always on point, and a sharp critic of Google. Amazon, Facebook and Apple (whom he calls the four horsemen).

+ Galloway chit-chats with Kara Swisher about Apple, Facebook, and the industry’s huge reckoning.
