Idea Generation
First, I reflected on my current knowledge and asked questions regarding cookies and their purpose in today’s society.

After asking these questions I concluded that cookies are primarily used for sweet satisfaction, or at least that’s how I have seen them be used. With this information I decided to look into how they could be used in other ways. Could they satisfy other taste desires? Could they provide a service to the consumer? What is the extent to which a cookie can benefit an individual?
Then, I got together with friends and called family members to help with the brainstorming process.

Finally, I consulted with friends and family again to hear their opinions on the ideas that had been generated and decide on the top two that I would bake.
Idea Test 1
Green Apple Pre-workout cookies
Cookies
- 1 Bag Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix
- 1 Stick Butter
- 1 Egg
Green Apple Pre-Workout Cookies
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1/4 cup green apple pre-workout

Directions
- Prepare Candies
— In a large heat proof bowl, combine light corn syrup and sugar, stir until sugar is moistened
— Cover bowl with plastic wrap and microwave on high for 3 minutes (be cautious of bubbling and hot sugar)
— Remove bowl, remove plastic wrap and stir for 10 seconds
— Cover with new plastic wrap and microwave for another 3 minutes
— Remove plastic wrap, allow to cool for 10 seconds, and then stir in pre-workout
2. Allow candy to sit while baking cookies
3. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar cookie mix, butter, and egg
4. Break up pre-workout candies and include in cookie mix
5. Roll 12 balls of cookie dough, 1.5 tbsp a piece, and lay on large cookie sheet
6. Bake at 350ºF for 7 minutes
7. Remove from oven, cool, and enjoy
The original idea was to bake hard candies made from green apple pre-workout directly into the cookies. All started off well until the baking came along and the candies melted again. This resulted in the candy burning and expanding the cookies to mold together.
Idea Test 2
Chocolate Goldfish Cookies (Sweet ’n’ Salty)
Cookies
- 1 Bag Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix
- 1 Stick Butter
- 1 Egg
- 1 cup crushed Goldfish

Directions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar cookie mix, butter, egg, and Goldfish
- Roll 12 balls of cookie dough, 1.5 tbsp a piece, and lay on large cookie sheet
- Bake at 350ºF for 7 minutes
- Remove from oven, cool, and enjoy
These cookies were amazing in concept, everyone knows that sweet and salty goes hand in hand. After talking to friends and family I determined that one of the most popular salty snacks is Goldfish and the majority of people also reported their favorite sweets to be chocolate related. This led me to make chocolate Goldfish cookies. Unfortunately, these cookies ended up lacking flavor and tasting like regular sugar cookies.
Iteration
After analyzing what went wrong in the first trial of the pre-workout cookies I determined that I needed to change how I incorporated the candies into the cookies and also add a flavor to cover up the potential taste of the burnt candies (just in case they were to burn).
With this, I decided to not bake the candies into the cookies, but rather sandwich the candy between two cookies. Along with this, I also added caramel between the cookies. This ended up making a nice caramel apple cookie, perfect for the upcoming season.
