I’m In on Out.
I love democracy, but in the last 48 hours my desire to live in a democratic nation has been called into question. Equal voting seems all very well and good until the result doesn’t go your way. Or at least that seems to be the mentality of a large amount of remain voters, of which I would like to reiterate am one of.
The call to hold a second referendum on Britain’s EU membership has surpassed previous government petition records and currently has over 2 million signatures.
Yes that is incredible and yes I wish remain had won, but I believe we cannot hold a second referendum.
Just because we all know that we messed up does not mean we can hold another vote and get rid of the democratic process, it is a slippery slope which offers very few plus points.
Consider our options.
Let’s say it doesn’t get that far, but the government realises it’s cock up and decides to hold a parliamentary vote to stop the leave vote from passing, which has been mentioned and they have the option to do, then they have once again demonised and diminished the voices of the millions of people who voted to leave, the majority of which belong to the people who feel they have been demonised and ignored for the last 20 years by the same bunch of suits in Westminster.
Now if a new vote does happen, whether or not we vote to leave again or to stay, all you have done is made that same majority of people doubly pissed off. They would rightly feel like they are not being listened to and this in turn would only widen the political chasm - both in parliament and in the general population - between those that voted in and those who voted out, a gap that is already at dangerously toxic levels.
Not to even mention the longer this shit show goes on for the more the European Union grows weary with us screwing their economy’s with uncertainty. We’re currently holding a gun to their heads while we stand around with our proverbial in our hands getting distracted by a Tory leadership battle. This gives them more reason to give Britain a terrible deal. I’d like to think they would be better than that, but judging by our reactionary politicians and leaders as an example then I can’t say that they would, or even should.
No, we need to deal with our mess and start to fix it from the ground up, start article 50, let the tories have their leadership battle in their corner by themselves and try and make the best of a bad situation democratically.
We have a larger electorate currently engaged in politics and concerned abut Britain’s future than ever before, and wasting our time on mourning and playing with democracy will only make us all weaker and many of us less engaged.
This is a death in the European family, Britain’s membership has died. It’s time Cameron, the man who put our country on the chopping board sat down our political family on both sides and started working through this like adults. If out of of nothing more than respect for the British people and democracy.
