Get kids outdoors with Wild Kids Leicestershire!

Welcome to Wild Kids Leicestershire, home of muddy inspiration and nature-based fun for kids in the East Midlands! Want to know more about who we are and what we’re about? You’ve come to the right place. Read on to find out all you need to know…

Wild Kids Leicestershire is a campaign that came as a result of my love of the outdoors. From the desire for my daughter to grow up being as engaged with nature as I was as a child, and still try to be.
In my opinion, we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country (we’re part of the National Forest for goodness sake!) and we need to make the most of the amazing green spaces, country parks and woodland that we have here. You know what they say — use it, don’t lose it!
Despite what we like to think sometimes, children don’t need finely tuned plans for an exciting day out, with expensive admission prices and attractions. Whack on a pair of wellies, grab your waterproofs, get out into the fresh air and open your mind to activities far simpler, cheaper and often more fulfilling.
Wild Kids Leicestershire is all about getting children outside and engaging with nature, whatever way that might be. We’re here to help you find *your* way.
- Find us on Facebook and give us a ‘like’ to keep up to date with community events and inspiring ideas to get outdoors.

We’ll be recommending great places to visit in our amazing county, as well as championing community news and events that support our “get outdoors” message.
But we’ll also be sharing inspiration with you on how to get outside in more creative ways; be it activities you can do in the garden or just the simpler ideas that can be super fun, but that often get overlooked. Think nature ID, muddy puddle splashing contests and den building!

Today’s kids are given a bad rap. Yes they spend more time in front of screens than we ever did but thanks to our modern office jobs and social media obsessions, so do we these days. Check out the stats below for some not-so surprising figures on that front.

Whether we like it or not, this is just the way things are going. Due to the ever-changing world around us, we have other distractions at the weekend that takes our minds off going on hikes or family bike rides; Facebook pages to stalk, weekly online shops to do and Netflix Originals series to binge on so we cannot blame our kids for wanting to do the same.
But for so many reasons, physical, mental and social, it’s important we try to foster that excitement about stepping away from the screen and going on a wild adventure.
Did you know that in a study by Public Health England and Disney this year, it was found that only 17% of primary school aged pupils are doing the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day?
And if they aren’t getting the exercise they need and are over-stimulated by screens, then sleep quality will begin to suffer which in turn feeds into their level of brain function.
So let’s try a new way. Put down the iPad this weekend, grab a picnic and go. There is so much going on in Leicestershire, and we’re going to help you find something to get stuck into that’s perfect for you and your family.

I’m Michaela, a mum of one who has just relocated back to North-West Leicestershire after a ten year hiatus in Bristol.
I love being back in Leicestershire. The community I live in is so friendly and I feel spoilt by the amount of green countryside on our doorstep.
My toddler and I love to go on adventures in our local parks and woodland. Our current favourite thing to do is deer-spotting and paddling in the stream at Bradgate Park, but that could change next week! Her personal favourite thing to do though is spot butterflies. We only need to venture to the garden for that and she’s more than happy!
