It is easy for white people to discount the importance of race, pretend it doesn’t matter.
We call that “white privilege” here in the USA. Also, you are the only one talking about “owning” a musical style. Clearly that is not possible. Hip hop is now international, with artists working in many languages all over the world. But it started in the USA, in black, urban communities. And yes, classical music IS a European musical style. That in no way means that people from other places do not enjoy hearing and playing that style, cannot fall in love with it and be transported. It is FOR anyone who can feel it, regardless of race or cultural background, and so is hip hop, mambo and kirtan. But these styles are all FROM different places. And when an art form is FROM a historically disenfranchised group, not acknowledging this is just another form of white privilege that we call “cultural appropriation” (a polite term for “stealing”).
