The global rise of new municipalism movements, particularly in light of the coronavirus crisis, shows that democratic citizen participation is becoming a popular and highly functional way of doing local politics. Metamodernism continues to evolve as an influential cultural phenomenon. We are now approaching the convergence of the two. This post follows on Part 1 by exploring how metamodern municipalism manifests through new institutions and organisations, and how this whole project could lead to a shift in state-level politics.
We start where we left off: the municipality. Your hometown / city and it’s local government offices. Probably a rather dull place. But it’s this level of local government that is fertile soil for the meso-level innovation and experimentation that Nordic Ideology (i.e. Metamodernism Book Two) calls for.
