Tune in to your channel (Jason Calacanis & Kathryn Finney)
The world values creators. So why aren’t you creating more stuff?
It’s the 13th day of the year, and Jason Calacanis has already published 15 blog posts. It’s also early in the day, so there may be 16 by midnight. His content is valuable, and I don’t miss a post because it’s honest and it relates to what I’m doing: building a startup. So, I subscribed.
Jason has seen his share of successes. He built and sold Weblogs, Inc for more than $25 million, raised $20 million to start Mahalo, and knows how to pick startups to invest in really well (Uber being among his hits). He doesn’t have to keep pushing content. But, This Week In Startups is among my favorite podcasts (I also love my own), and it is necessary listening for founders and startup teams. Publishing all this content, blog and podcast, helps him build his profile, meet great founders he might want to invest in early, and keep his pulse on the ecosystem so he can continue seeing success.
Maybe you can start like Kathryn Finney did. 2003, she starts a blog as a hobby talking about something she knew a lot about: fashion. Turns out, it was one of the first fashion blogs and is today one of the top fashion blogs on the planet raking in 10 cadillac trunk fulls of cash every year. She parlayed this success into high profile TV appearances, a book deal, and a successful tech conference targeted to reach underrepresented minorities in the field.
What are you waiting for? Publish quality material. You don’t need anybody's permission to become the next go-to voice from your Wisconsin-based Apple watch blog (that angle is probably wide open), or Clear Channel 2.0 all from your success reviewing Rae Sremmurd songs on your podcast, or maybe the new Ryan Seacrest developing your own Youtube shows. Go intern at a local TV station, get yourself a media pass and make your way to the red carpet.
You live in the greatest time in history. You have the internet. Identify what it is you know a lot about, and start talking about it. Or, find what you’d like to know a lot about, and start talking to those who already know, then publish the conversations.
This is the year you create your own channel.
