Couple of years ago, I was driving from Chicago down to northeast Arkansas (the ancestral homeland), and I took a detour off of I-57 to Cairo, mainly because I needed gas, but also because I’m attracted to out-of-the-way looking places, and Cairo certainly looked like one, at least according to Google Maps. I was astounded by how desolate and abandoned the town was. I tried to buy gas at the blue mini-mart pictured above (but there was none). After that I drove around for a few minutes, and then, seized with a sudden feeling of un-safeness, high-tailed it back out to the freeway.
I very much enjoyed reading this story, Chris. Will check out your other stuff.
