Say it before it’s too late.
A simple life rule that can make a world of a difference.
For the past three years I’ve had the above words set as my screen saver on my phone. It served as a reminder for me to express, without hesitation, my love and appreciation for the people and blessings in my life. This quote stuck with me because three years ago my grandpa passed away and it was the first time someone that close to me left this earth. I remember feeling a sense of regret at the fact that I rarely visited him even though he was only a six hour plane ride away. I began wondering why was it easy for me to plan trips with friends to visit unknown places for celebrations and birthdays but when it came down to visting the man who helped raised me, it was a question of funds and schedule availability.
“Be brave. Say what you need to say. When you don’t speak up, there’s a lot of important stuff that ends up not getting said.” — Marc Chernoff
Through this I’ve learned that regret has a way of eating away at your positive thoughts and energy. With his passing, I remember feeling as though I was stuck in a sinkhole of emotions that I didn’t know how to escape. I felt sorrow and I also felt remorseful that I didn’t spend more time with him as I got older and when I still had the chance to do so.
Time and time again we hear the phrase that ‘life is too short’ and that we should ‘do it now’ before it’s too late. This call to action always seems to come at a time when someone or something has been taken away from us. We say things like “I wish I said…” or “I wish I had done…” after the fact that the opportunity has already come and gone.
Three years later, I’m happy to say that I have kept my promise to my grandpa, that I have continued to express the love I have for the people in my life and for the blessings that I have received. His passing has enabled me to realize the important aspects of life which has given me more peace and closure instead of wondering about the what if’s and should of, would of, could of’s.

Next time you want to express your emotions to the people you love or tell your team how much you appreciate them, or tell a stranger that you like their shoes, go ahead and tell them. Don’t realize what you wanted to say when it’s too late to tell them.
