Good article Caitlin. Censorship is an insidious thing — it is the modern form of ‘political correctness’ taken to an extreme. It relies on the majority of people not being able, or willing, to make much effort to seek the truth or other perspectives. Then the majority rules, thus justifying further efforts to censor and limit the voice of the minority — who in turn become dissenters, and even ‘traitors’ (we are getting very close to that one).
It is a well proven strategy that has been used for centuries, and applies as much to our modern information age as it did before.
Chomsky describes it well. Let people debate as much as they like — but within carefully proscribed limits. It keeps them busy, distracted, and under the illusion that they have freedom of speech, and a voice in the other illusion which we call a democracy.
I was born in a fascist country — Portugal. I lived in another one, Spain, when Franco was still alive & in charge. I know how it works, and as far as I can see, we are, in the West anyway, heading rapidly in that direction. All the signs are there, and as in history there is only one way out. The bloody way.
