Historical Methods of Composing Electronic Music
Chris Otchy

A small clarification: “…Brian Eno riffed on this same technique in the late 1970s and 80s along with guitarist Robert Fripp. With two tape machines, he created a 3–5 second tape loop that continually recorded new sounds as it played back the old ones.” Frippertronics is not a tape loop; it is a signal loop utilizing two tape machines in sound-on-sound mode. Fripp later used a 16 Second EHX delay similarly, switching to TC Electronic and Eventide delays during the 90s, then calling this subsequent and evolving approach to Frippertronics, “Soundscapes.” I sometimes worked as tech, tour manager and promoter for Fripp during this period.
