After 30-plus years as a commissioned solopreneur I never thought I knew squat about strategy. My advantage was having a non-employed team committed to me and not the cause. I wore all the executive hats but outsourced the detail to “those who did it best and who always completed the work ahead of deadline (because they wanted more work)”. It did not matter to them if I was right or wrong in my strategy or decision making, so long as they were paid in a timely fashion. I never quibbled over what they charged…it was simply another expense. The “strategy” was consistent and based exclusively on growth. The idea being, if i wanted a 40% raise next year, I had to identify where that was to come from a year in advance; then go get it. Occasionally I was blindsided by negative surprises. I learned quickly that persistence would produce positive surprises and more customers. There was a time when I over-analyze everything…then one day I looked an my income and realized everything was working out better than I ever expected. Thus the course was validated and the motto was “Onward” with the confidence that if I just continued working my 100 hours a week, all would work out. If I had done things differently and not followed my gut instinct, it is likely that I could not have purchased this retirement ranch cash. The motto remains…ONWARD!
