The Alt-Right Security Blanket
Guns are in the media. You can’t get away from them. Stories of school shootings, stories of protests, police violence involving guns, it goes on and on. It’s everywhere.
This morning, I woke up, my partner and I were browsing social media as we tried to wake up, still groggy and half asleep. He showed me a picture of an individual in what appeared to be some sort of big box store, with a tool holster, holding what appeared to be an AR-15. I’m no gun expert. I don’t know for sure what it was, but it was the gun that has entered the public consciousness as an “assault rifle.”
I’m not sure what image that person was trying to portray. All I saw was a scared, insecure person, lacking in any self-confidence. You’re so scared of the world you can’t go out in public without advanced firepower, designed for nothing but firing as many bullets as quickly as possible?
The same crowd that seems terrified that “the government is coming for my guns” is the one that is pushing for government to control the bodies of everyone around them.
They are the ones most likely to support legislation to regulate the bodies of afab people, worry about who is using what bathroom, and be scared of people on the basis of how much melanin they have in their skin.
