I like your point on how research departments are far removed from ‘the street’. That is they aren’t located and centred within communities. I agree.

I think there might be space to experiment with setting up learning/innovation/hack/maker spaces/labs/hubs/centres to act as an organic source of research, development, academia and learning from within neighbourhoods and communities. How could development of infernal engines of war ever be a thing if all scientific research is the result of work at community-centred innovation hubs.
