This Week In Dev #1
In preparation for my Makers Academy adventure, I was planning to hit the ground running with smashing my Ruby learning, blogging my progress like a Wannabe Coder/Tech Evangelist and hit the gym 5 times a week.
Then the flu struck!
EVERY YEAR I SAY ‘YEAH NOT KEEN ON GETTING A FLU SHOT’ THEN THIS SHIT HAPPENS!!!
Anyway, after loading up on Lemsip and a couple of days of rest, I was ready to kick some ass.
End of Week Commitment
Despite my flu, I’ve been working on both my Ruby skills and Git skills. My Ruby skills are coming along nicely. I’m working through the last stages of Chris Pine’s book and I bought myself a copy of David Black’s book ‘The Well-Grounded Rubyist’ which is a bit of an intense read, but I’ll be looking to dive into it by the end of the week.
As far as git is concerned, I’ve been forcing myself to commit to GitHub through the command line rather than using the Desktop application. It’s going well so far simply because I haven’t done anything too complex. Simple git add, git commit and git push every time.
This upcoming week I want to expand to working with different git branches and merging, so that should be fun.
On the recommendation of the Makers Academy crew, I’ve been working on my typing ability using typingclub.com. It’s completely free and not only does it teach you how to type properly, it also covers topics such as correct posture (Damn these coastal Americans and their holistic lifestyles! :P). So far my typing sucks (I’m doing it incorrectly right now), but if I can keep it up before I start at Makers, then I should be sweet by the time it starts.
Goals for the upcoming week
Trying to get into the habit of setting goals for myself, so are some that I hope to achieve this week.
- Be more comfortable using Hashes and Arrays in Ruby.
- Learn and be familiar with Git Merges.
- Continue to work on typingclub
- Start work on the Well-Grounded Rubyist book.
- Have fun :)
That’s all for this week. I love how I’ve put a date on the title of this thing like I’m going to do this every week. I’ll try and keep this up, but it won’t be on-the-dot type shit.
