You have my deepest sympathy in dealing with the hopelessly incompetent, dishonest and insensitive NYPD at a time like that. I don’t think there are many people in this city who don’t have first hand experience of how corrupt and poisonous this department is. They are notorious for lying through their teeth in order to save themselves the work and effort of prosecuting dangerous drivers, even (especially?) after someone was killed.
Recently while cycling I was deliberately rear ended at high speed and almost killed by a psychotic, drug addled driver in an act of road rage, witnessed by many. Instead of treating me like the badly victim of a brutal crime, the NYPD cops who arrived at the scene arrested me on the basis of an obviously false accusation on the part of the obviously intoxicated driver, which was not backed up by witnesses. In the process, they tore cartilage in my already weakened shoulder. The rest of the day is a blur of being treated like a criminal and wincing in agony from my injuries as I sat handcuffed to a bench in the precinct for 3 hours. The NYPD subsequently falsified a criminal report about the events leading up to the crash (a report which was supposed to be based upon my account of the incident but which they twisted around deliberately to make me look guilty). I then found out that they didn’t even write an accident report in relation to the crash (excuse: “hey buddy, we’re human you know, we make mistakes”), and also subsequently falsified the arrest report to include a confession from me which never happened in a million years (they wrote: “and then the defendant said ‘yeah, it was me, I did it.’)
Dealing with the NYPD in trying to untie these knots of lies, corruption and incompetence is almost impossible. They pass you from dept to dept, they don’t call you back, they dismiss everything you say, every concern you have. I can only imagine how frustrating and painful it is to have to deal with their low grade, low IQ BS after losing a loved one in an accident. It must be hell.
I now find that there is a possibility the guy who deliberately ran me over might not even be prosecuted. Not once has the NYPD reached out to me in relation to the case against him, but they are still prosecuting me over the clearly ludicrous and baseless accusation from an intoxicated psychopath that I “damaged his car.”
The sad fact is that the NYPD, far from being New York’s “finest,” they would in fact feel more at home in a totalitarian 3rd world dictatorship. They really are that bad. Please sue them if you can.
