How comfortable are you with JavaScript?

“How comfortable are you with JavaScript”? This is the question that I’ve heard asked in nearly every software engineering job interview I’ve been a part of over the last 5–10 years. I’ve seen this question seen from the role of asker, answerer, and observer.

The typical reply from the answerer is a reluctant numeric value between 1 and 10. I’ve noticed that when the answer is 5 or below, the answer giver has little to no hesitation in giving the answer; however, when the answer is 7 and above, I’ve noticed the answer giver becomes hesitant or unsure of their answer.

The hesitation has everything to do with a lack of context. By “context” I mean the following:
