Only use Torx screws (the ones with the star head)

Forget all you know about screws. If you’re even thinking about screwing anything together with a Philips head screw, you’re.. well.. screwed. Still using nails? What are you a homesteader from the 1850's?!

Anymore, people who love building things but hate watching screws strip use the one and only — “Torx Screw”

Torx screws are star-headed screws that basically don’t strip.

Look at this and now look at your feeble screw.

That’s because the star pattern allows the bit to stay in place and apply more force to turning the screw instead of ripping it apart. I’ve driven thousands of Torx screws and the only time I’ve ever had them strip is when I was somehow abusing them.

Recommendations

I use Spax-branded screws and have had an insane amount of success with them. GRK makes essentially the same thing. Note that each box comes with a free Torx bit so you’ll always have a fresh bit to work with. They are more expensive than regular screws but totally worth it. Also, the screws are so good I re-use them all the time, pulling them out of old projects and putting them in anew.

Also, there are a TON of screw sizes, ranging from finish nail heads (really small, great for detail work) to big fatty pan heads (great for grabbing a lot of wood to pull together).
