How Does One Create A Neutral News Organization?

Critical Thinking #3

With the prevalence of digital media, citizens are becoming more aware of media bias in everyday news.

First, we must understand that truth is a social construction of reality, with the help of media framing. This results in the propaganda model, as outlined by Herman and Chomsky in their book Manufacturing Consent in 1988. The propaganda model dictates that it is close-to-impossible to create a completely neutral news organization. However, there may some solutions to help combat media bias.

Crowdfunding

To evade pressures from major stockholders or companies, newly-created news organizations can utilize technology for crowdfunding. The ubiquitousness of such sites can allow such fundraisers to become viral and gain public support across the globe. This can also remove the need for advertisements, and thus get rid of pressures from advertisers.

Paywall

If crowdfunding is not a feasible idea, then a paywall can be set up, so only paid subscribers can access the content. This may be an alternative to advertisements, or used to generate basic salaries (if the news organization is nonprofit).

Citizen journalism

To expand reachable sourcing, citizen journalism can be adapted. This means that media organizations no longer have to rely on PR or authorities for reliable news. Citizen journalism can encourage instantaneous reporting and feedback, which can be modified in real-time.

Independent ownership

To avoid flak from established powers or external pressures to censor news content, newly-created news organizations may consider retaining independent ownership, as it would allow full control of the content.

Open discussion for readers

To prevent ideological marginalization (and thus, a biased stance) in news organizations, there can be an open platform for discussion between readers, which can then be included in a hoverlink in the original news content. Thus, readers have access to alternative stances or news sources, which can encourage them to voice their opinion and create a continuous cycle.
