Help to Buy Windows — The homeowner considering installing new or replacement windows should gather all the information available to select and install a variety of windows types. The chosen windows should be in keeping with the style and design of the house, whether it is a completely new window or a replacement window.

One of the most important things to remember when installing new or replacement windows is to get the right size! The rough opening of the window needs to be between one and two inches taller and wider than the actual window. Buy windows which are the approximate size or smaller than existing windows. It is far easier to make the frame opening slightly smaller than trying to enlarge the opening unless of course, you are intentionally fitting larger windows.

Once new or replacement windows have been purchased, the old window must be removed. Begin by removing the exterior trim and all of the nails holding it in place. Once this has been completed the window should lift out of the frame opening.

Help 2 Buy Windows — The key to successfully installing new or replacement windows is the preparation. Once the old window is out, remove all old debris and nails from the frame. Use a level and plumb line to center the window correctly, if it’s not level and plumb it won’t open properly; so take time to make sure it is done right! The chances are some shims will be needed to square up the window.

Once the window is plumb and squared correctly, hold it in place with a few nails. Nearly all new windows are supplied with nailing flanges which makes installation relatively easy. Begin nailing the window from the top right-hand corner and work downward. Keep checking that the window is still in the correct position and sitting square and plumb both inside and outside.

Windows can be extremely heavy, especially if they are large; so ensure that you physically cable of undertaking the task or ask a neighbor or friend to lend a hand. Extra care should be taken when removing the old windows especially if it fits very tight. Sudden jolts can cause old windows to shatter.

When the window is being held on the outside, remove the inside retention bands that hold the window square. Check that the window opens smoothly. If all is well, start adding additional nails every few inches around the nailing flange. If the window is not opening smoothly, remove some of the retention nails and re-level and re-center the window.
