The warm weather is right around the corner and when it comes to finding amazing quality white wine for the price, it can be difficult at times. Luckily, there are some gems out there that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, but are made by some of the biggest names in the wine industry. The Loyo from Yolo is one of those wines!
If you aren’t familiar with the Matthiasson wines, they make some great premium Napa wines that can cost anywhere from $75 to $100 a bottle. Their belief in that wine is an expression of the ability to farm grapes within the region is one of the many reasons they are special. They are involved in the process from the beginning of the growing season all the way to the bottle with all estate owned fruit. That is rare in modern day wine making.
Owners Steve and Jill Matthiasson grow some of the classic grapes in Napa Valley, but they also grow some out of the ordinary grapes as well. Loyo form Yolo is made of two Italian varietals that were transported to Napa, Vermentino and Cortese. Both grapes are known to make exceptional wines in Italy, and at Matthiasson, they believed they can make amazing wines here with them as well.
It is safe to say that they over delivered on their expectations. The wine is insanely delicious. Notes of green apple, citrus, and unripened peach all rounded out with beautiful notes of mineral deposits. This is the definition of an outdoor wine.
There is an endless amount of foods that can go with this style of wine. It is great with shellfish, cured meats, olives, salads, fruit, and the list goes on. Sometime though, after a long day of work, you want to sit on your back porch and have a glass of wine. That is really where a wine like this shines.
There are so many value wines out there like this, you just have to dig a little! To get a win from a winemaker that is most known for making premium wines in a premium region at an insanely reasonable price is really something to be excited about!
