Philippines Project Profile

Quick Facts
Capital: Manila
Population: 100 Million
Access to Water Source: 16% of households
Key Information: The Philippines endure an average of 22 severe tropical storms every year. WTW’s work began immediately after Typhoon Haiyan, also know as Typhoon Yolanda, struck in 2013. Typhoon Haiyan was the deadliest typhoon on record, and the strongest storm ever recorded at landfall.
WTW’s Impact: Over 75,000 people have been reached with clean water.
Water Solutions Used: Sawyer PointOne, Rainwater Catchment, W.A.S.H (Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene), and Bio-Sand Filtration.
Background

The Philippines is a sovereign island country, located in Southeast Asia. Due to climate change and their geographic location, the Philippines endure an average of 22 severe tropical storms each year. In November of 2013, a Category 5 Typhoon named Super Typhoon Haiyan, otherwise known as Typhoon Yolanda, struck the Philippines. This massive storm, along with other combined storms, affected over 16 million people. In addition, more than 4.1 million people were displaced. Typhoon Haiyan was the deadliest typhoon on record, and the strongest storm ever recorded at landfall.

In storm-affected areas, the majority of all public and household water systems were contaminated or destroyed. The most basic needs for millions of people’s survival — water, food, shelter, and medicine — were extremely limited. Wine To Water responded immediately, raising money to fund projects on the ground as quickly as possible, providing much needed assistance in the areas that were hardest hit.

Wine To Water’s Impact
Wine To Water’s relief efforts included coordination, distribution and training for a portable, and highly effective water filter, called the Sawyer PointONE. Wine To Water’s distribution approach focused on far-flung areas like Eastern Samar, Northern Cebu, and the hardest hit areas of Leyte (Tacloban), and Iloilo Island.
Since 2011, Wine To Water has directly benefitted over 75,000 people in the Philippines through numerous ground projects.

Water Solutions Used

Sawyer PointONE Water Filter: The Sawyer filter is a gravity-fed system composed of absolute hollow .1-micron tubing. Sawyer filters are capable of removing 99.9999% of ALL harmful bacteria, E. coli, coliform, and protozoa. Each unit filters one liter of water per minute and can last up to 10 years.
Rainwater Catchment: More to come…
W.A.S.H. (Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene): Informing the community on proper use and maintenance is critical to the sustainability of our ground projects. Without this step, our impact would be far less reaching and much more temporary.

Bio-Sand Filtration: More to come…
