RE: routine…that’s a great question. If you want more, check out my book. (Not a sales pitch, an entire section is focused to the science of routine, I swear!) But in short, two reasons. The first is the more I keep things a ritual, the less I have to waste mental energy on, well, anything. I can just go through the ritual and save all the energy for writing. Second, there is some interesting psychology/neuroscience research called “affordances” which basically says the more we link certain behaviors to certain physical cues, the more our brains literally get “invited” to do those behaviors once we see those cues.
Totally. I’m a big believer that, generally speaking, performance = performance. That was a HUGE theme at the crux of my book…that the principles that underlie peak performance are very similar regardless of the domain. Glad you enjoyed the article!
